build a robot (read all 5 entries…)

Worth doing!

excited to say, its under works.  — 2 years ago

Yes yes, back in the ROBOT STUDIO!!!!!! Woooo Happiness.

Messing around with different designs so far. I think I’ve just about narrowed down what function it will have.(You’ll have to wait and see.) And I like it!

Time to experiment and quickly get going on it. I was just hunting parts on line and having really crappy luck! I’ve been told to look for some specific pieces at Chicago Scientific Surplus by a truly brilliant man. Except I can’t find them on the web! ugh and double drat! No time for this!

Three cheers to anyone who can find me their web address. Chicago Scientific Surplus – that’s the name of the business.

I need to go to bed. I’m blurry-eyed. And slurrynumple. as well as crumpti-whexing. for real!

Comments:

good to hear!

i’m very curious to see what you come up with.

about chicago scientific surplus… what is it exactly that you are looking for? i’m in experimental physics and could possibly point you in the direction of another venue to acquire these parts cheaply/easily.

I (heart) physics

DC motorized gyroscopes! Little ones. Something that would fit in the palm of our hand.

What do you do?

Hmm...

OK. I’ll peak around, maybe ask someone in mechanical engineering. If I can come up with something, I’ll let you know!

I’ll also peak around for Chicago Scientific Surplus and other surplus places I’ve come across. We tend to get swamped with ads for this kind of stuff in my lab (and I frequently run across these websites when looking for specialized optics for my experiments).

As for me, I’m a graduate student in experimental physics. I work for a physical chemist doing spectroscopy of viscous liquids, trying to understand why some liquids turn into glasses upon cooling while others crystallize. This entails a lot of work with short pulsed (femtosecond) lasers and the like. Doing this work is a lot of fun, kinda reminds me of the Tinker Toys I had when growing up! :)

How did you get involved in building a robot? That’s seriously cool.

Tinker toys!

Me too. I got into sculpture actually. The physical world has definitely been my playground. It was only a matter of time until it went from 3D to 4D. I started making sculpture that moved – from the wind, or from touch. Automating and making it more interactive was a huge desire, but it took me for ever to find the software to interact with the physical world. Now I’m playing with all sorts of time based media including a little interactive video. But mechanical robots are TOP! I love making things with materials.

What you’re doing looks really cool! I used to have house mates that were physicists. We used to hang out in their lab and goof around.

Come to think of it…Geez what an odd chain of events… Now there are these two groups of robot, Guru’s really, I somehow miraculously got connected with. They are totally amazing people. Its been a whirl wind I tell you. A whirl wind. I’m learning a lot!

Robotic Art

That’s extremely cool that you are approaching this from the artistic end. Over here at the MIT Museum, there is a collection of (I guess you would call it) kinetic art. Machines constructed in such a means that, for example, you turn a crank and an elaborate, purely mechanical gearing mechanism will move a hand around to sign a person’s name in perfect cursive. Another interactive/kinetic sculpture(?) I saw was basically a tall, small shopping cart that you push around. On the top were a bunch of mechanical, metallic worms that always faced the direction the wheels face and which would appear to inch their way in place on the top. Kinda hard to describe, actually… but very neat!

In fact, I think that MIT has a few artists in residence whose job it is to come up with art with a scientific or technological bent. Being involved in science, I can only say that I admire artists who do this kind of thing—it brings a definite vivid human element directly into what can often be a sterile field… but there is so much beauty in this field to take advantage of.

I’d be interested in seeing stuff you’ve done. Do you have a website?

I’ve only done a cursory glance around for these items you need (life has been astonishingly busy to the point that I actually have spent much less than my usual amount of time trolling around 43T!), so I haven’t seen anything yet. Rest assured, I’ll keep my eyes open for ya!

eobo who's feeling a bit abstract has gotten 3 cheers on this entry.
