Besides the basics (how old are you, where do you live), I ask things like:
What was the best/worst thing that happened to you today? What are your favorite books/foods/colors? Can you tell me the names of some of your friends? What kinds of things do you do together? If you could make 3 wishes, what would you wish for? What makes you happy/sad/angry? What job would you like to do when you grow up?
As I’m sure you know, asking kids questions can be tricky, because they often give one-word answers, so after the initial answer, I usually follow up with a question like—Can you tell me a little bit more about it?
Our son likes music a lot, so I also ask him to sing a song, if he’s up for it. Or tell a story.
If you don’t have a video camera, you can always show your kids pictures and ask them to tell you about the pictures, then write down what they say, word for word.
