So what is up with sodom and gamora?

Okay, i still have not finished genesis and I have a ton of questions to boot.
1. Where did the egyptians come from? They follow the Tower of babel and it lists the descendents from there who have nothing to do with egypt.
2. What did sodom and gamora do that was so horrible? Granted, it appears to be okay to rape a woman, but not a man (neither happened) and clearly, they were just not nice. But to be wiped off the face of the earth or turned into a pillar of salt for looking back at the cities? Just a little over the top there.
3. Then there’s the whole thing with the covenenants. God made a lot of covenents with people. So what happened between the old and new testament? God makes a covenent with Noah that he will never destroy the whole of humanity again. Yet I read revelations for a class. wouldn’t that be breaking the covenent with Moses and humanity?

I think I need to take an adult study course. Because I am really enjoying the read, but I have too many questions.

2. My Answer:

As far as I can remember reading that part of the Bible 10 yrs ago, God wanted to destroy Sodom & Gomorrah for their sins, horrible horrible sins [ie. raping men & women, bowing to their idols or gods, not obeying the 10 commandments, abomination, fornication, rebellion, etc.]

Genesis 18:26
The LORD said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”

as you can clearly see, God couldn’t find not even 50 people who are good for Him to save the land… and later on continued in Jeremiah:

Jeremiah 23:14
And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen something horrible: They commit adultery and live a lie. They strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns from his wickedness. They are all like Sodom to me; the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah.”

I don’t think God over kill the situation of Sodom & Gomorrah… they have brought disaster/distractions to themselves and NOT God. And who are we to question God and point fingers at Him when He is the Almighty who brought us to this wonderful life and later on ruined it ourselves?

Ask God for guidance while you read the Bible. It’s a very complex book when you don’t have His spirit to guide you.
This is spiritual, so approach it spiritually, otherwise we’ll just be lost in all the chapters and verses and all will be in vain.

A little insight thanks

Okay, not having read Jeremiah, that is helpful. Because there is no mention of any specific acts that actually took place in genesis. I spoke to a Rabbi friend today who said it was because they were “inhospitable.” Which didn’t make the whole thing any easier. And in G18:26, he actually negotiates down to 10 righteous people.” Plus, this is even before exodus, so there are no 10 commandments to break. I always assumed that this was in chronological order. Perhaps instead, they are vingettes, to be taken each on their own.

Hmmm. Much to think about.

And I mean no disrespect in my questions and how I ask them. I’m atheist, so I don’t mean to point fingers at god or anyone in particular. Just trying to understand the whole old testament wrath of god and all.

perhaps both at the same time

But I will need a copy of that. I have 10 bibles in the house, no Anne Frank.

Wouldn't

you like to know.

oopps

sorry about including the 10 commandments there, I was overwhelmed, hihi… but anyways there are lots of scriptures in the Bible tackling or mentioning about the Sodom & Gomorrah, I just can’t remember them all. And yes I think you are correct about the Bible being in chronological order… I used to know more about these but since I’ve been cold attending church 6yrs now I happen to forget almost everything I have learned and my knowledge of it is a bit blurry now :-( Thanks for this thread, made me think of visiting the church :)

PS:
yeah what’s up with you having 10 bibles? geez you only need one I think.. ;)

1) they were once believed to be descended from Ham, but the Egyptian language is in the Afro-Asiatic family, which to Semitic languages also belong to (eg: Hebrew, Arabic)

2) According to Rabbinical traditions they were inhospitable, greedy and uncompassionate.

3) According to a lot of Christian theologies, new covenants supercede old ones. Not sure what particular groups accept or reject this belief, though.

Thanks

Always nice to learn different perspectives.

The Truth

I find this extremely amusing that we are not allowed to question God on things that cannot be proven one way or another. This is a MAN MADE rule to keep the world from evolving.

Put yourself back in the time when everyone thought the world was flat. At that time, the population fought the travels “Who are you to question the world being flat. That is how GOD CREATED it. Who are you to question GOD”. Of course, the leaders of the world ALWAYS QUESTION and this lead to the discovery that the world was actually round, oh yah, and there are other people on the other part of the world that we didn’t know existed. Sort of blow a hole in the whole “Adam and Eve” theory.

How about this. If Adam and Eve were the first 2 people on earth, then we are all products of incest. Ask any Christian leader and their response “Who are you to question”. What that means is this. “I don’t know the answer, so instead of looking stupid, I will shame you for asking STUPID questions”.

How about the when Cane killed Able. He was banished from his land, and walked for days and nights. What does he run into. None other than another tribe of people. Would these not be his brothers. But there was only Cane and Able. Doesn’t make sense. Again, ask a Clergy and they will tell you. “Who are you to question the Bible”

Let’s go to Sodom and Gomorrah. God sent 2 angles to get Lot, Abraham’s nephew. The men of the town went to Lot and wanted to “know” (Have anal sex) with the men. Lot says no no no… please take my 2 daughters instead!!! WHAT!!! Depending which version of the bible you read, the story continues that the men take the daughters and rape them. One of them is hommoraged so bad she dies at the door of her home. In the morning, Lot says “GET UP WOMEN… We need to leave”. He finds that she is dead, so he cuts her up in 12 pieces and sends a piece to each of the tribes of Isreal to demonstrate his disqust for the state of the world. The New King James version re-wrote the story that the men refused and were blinded and all was well. Ask a clergy that and you already know the answer.

How about the biggest farce in the Bible to date. Jesus was a decendant of King David. Right? Joseph, was a decendant of King David, but Mary concieved Jesus through immaculate conception. IE. She was s virgin. Joseph had nothing to due with it. Ask a clergy that? How about the fact that the 2 accounts of the geneology of Jesus provided in the Bible itself (Matthew and Luke)contradict each other. They are not even close. Get my point?

Ask yourself how many times God destroyed man, woman and child in the old testament. The Ark, Jericho, and Sodom and Gommorah are the ones I remember off the top of my head and I haven’t been to church in years. What kind of morals can you learn from a God that destroys innocent people. Wait a minute, I forgot, I’m not supposed to question God. I wouldn’t question if it made sense. The only reason the CHurch wants you to have someone to guide you through such a “complex” book is so that they can remind you… DON’T QUESTION GOD. IF YOU DO, He’ll turn you into a pillar of salt like Lot’s wife, just for looking back at the burning city. Little harsh don’t you think.

How about destroying EVERYONE on the face of the earth with the flood?

As science progresses it provides answers that without the direct intent, prove that the stories in the Bible are based on extremely uneducated people. It’s too the point that many Christian’s are now agreeing that the bible is not a true account, but stories to guide us. If this is true (and it is) then the whole Christian and Islam religion are founded on man made stories, so any time someone says not to qestion God you can say… I’m not questioning God, I am questioning MAN’s interpretation of God (more correctly named the UNKNOWN). All the good things in the world today would not be here if we did not question.

I highly recommend reading a book called “The God Dilusion” by Richard Dawkins. He does a great job at presenenting the information about and 100s of more examples, all backed up with scriptural references, direct quotes from Pope’s, Bishop’s, spiritual leaders, scientists, President’s, Senators, etc… it’s very eye opening, and really highlights the similarities of Hitler vs. Jews, all Racist movements, Protestant’s vs. Catholics, Christian’s vs. Jews vs. Muslim’s, Bush, etc…

Anyway. Your questions are warranted. We all need to be comfortable with our own belief’s. Don’t ever let anyone tell you not to question. The one’s that do are hiding something. God want’s us to grow, otherwise he would never have created us.

I believe the people who follow today’s versions of the religions are mostly good people. They have, for the most part, good morals. The one’s with strong belief are extremely successful at attracting what they want in their life. These are all noble things.

The problem is that you still have people who act like old testament God and believe they need to rid the world of “Man, woman, and child… sparing none of the non-believers/evil doers”. Is that what you want?

Watch CNN for 60 minutes and you’ll see the US, versus the terrorists, Isrealites vs. Palistinians, Catholic vs. protestants, Jews, vs Muslims, Capitalists vs socialists vs. communists. These “extremists” as we call them today, are actually following the roots of their religion. Why would they not. They actually listen to the message “Don’t Question GOD!!!” and take everything literally.

You be the judge. Question and you’ll come up with your own truth.

Take care.
