Tornados 3 years ago

It was April of 1974. We lived in a suburban ranch house in Centerville, Ohio. I remember looking out the living room picture window and seeing a tornado fly over our house. We headed for the basement for an extended stay.

That was one of the tornados sighted during the super outbreak that killed 33 people in nearby Xenia, Ohio.

Wow...

it was close enough that you actually saw it?

Tornadoes are scary, scary things. I grew up in Tenn, where we didn’t have all that many of them, but that small acquaintence was enough to make me really wary of ‘em.

I live in earthquake country, but I’m much scareder of tornadoes.

Tennessee...

has plenty of tornadoes now! I think in the past 6 or 7 years in Jackson alone we’ve had about 4 or 5 tornadoes. And two of those were on the same day! Tornadoes are very destructive, but with proper monitoring of weather usually you have time to take cover to protect yourself. But, then again, my retirement plans call for going out to the midwest and chasing tornadoes. I love observing weather, so I might be a little different from the average person.

I have a theory...

that most people have some scenario that fascinates them so much that it is actually easier to live in a part of the world where that particular thing tends to happen.

I am fascinated by earthquakes. I’ve been in one big one, with major damage to my home and my pocketbook. I don’t like those very much. But the little ones (up to about 5.5 in CA) are something else—a reminder that most human-made permanence (and much natural permanence) is an illusion… I dunno. I just like ‘em.

So I understand you about tornadoes, although I must admit, you can have my share of them, Jack!
