There is more than the genre approach...

One thing that hes had me perturbed over the years, especially when talking amongst fellow music-lovers is the question: “what type of music do you listen to?” i never know what to say. i dont know if that makes me short sighted or not, ?, but something i’ve tried to do over the years outside genre classifying is to combine songs in sequence that flow into each other to make a logical, or emotional progression. many of these little compilations of mine are on just this side of being mixes, but doing this can teach you about the music you like in a different way. by this i mean, many songs can make friends sonically even if they are from completely disparate genres, and finding pairs or groups of songs that can do this, can really make you think about how to gage a piece of music, and then to re-examine its definition, YAY! happy listening!

I totally agree!

This radio show I started up last summer was all about that actually: the idea of not only mixing genres but weaving around them entirely, basing the playlists on connections between sound, words, flow, meaning and context – regardless of style or genre. This, to me, is one of the best ways to listen to music and discover what your true tastes are and what’s important to you as a listener, artist yourself, or both.
