Now accepting suggestions for delicious vegan appetizers to serve

I’ve been testing several recipes, and they will definitely be a part of our housewarming spread: Walnut Pecan Pate and Cashew Red Pepper Ambrosia! Yum.

But guests do not thrive on nut spreads alone! I am looking for other sweet or savory treats with which to delight my guests.

What about pizza?

Instead of cheese, you can use the soy “mozzerella” shreds and use veggies instead of meats. Making pizza crust isn’t that difficult, either, if you can’t find them commercially. My recipe that I make doesn’t have any animal products in it. (unless honey is considered that, which I would think might be able to be substituted with sugar maybe if it is objectionable) Just make a regular sized one or two of them and cut them into two or three bite serving sizes. I can post my pizza crust recipe if you want to try it.

Adar is on schedule.

Tofutti "cream cheese"...

a soy product… with a side of red or green pepper jelly. Pretty, and very good on crackers.

did you try the banana muffin recipe

i gave you?

did i give you a banana blueberry muffin recipe? am i hallucinating?

i have this weird memory of typing it out.

anyway, if you got it, try it with chocolate chips instead of blueberries. i had only made it with chips and loved them, then recently made them with blueberries and found them merely good.

and how vegan are you? do you guys eat honey? if so, i have a really super recipe for vegan cheesecake. i also have a really good chocolate cake with chocolate mint icing - you could cut it up into little squares - and vegan nanaimo bars (do americans know what nanaimo bars are?).

two things that i always put on the table when a crowd is coming over are greek grape leaves stuffed with rice and mint and lemon juice - they’re self contained little finger foods, delicious, vegan and always a huge hit. a tin of 80 of them sells for ten bucks in these parts and while it may feel weird to put something canned out for your spread they are really, really delicious and everyone goes nuts for them, plus, having this reliable favourite frees you up to spend a little more time cooking more finicky stuff. i also always make burritos my mother’s way. here’s the secret (shhh): you pan fry them lightly in olive oil - just a minute on all sides so that they’re nicely browned. this makes them taste infinitely better. inside, put a dab of homemade refried beans and a little salsa, if you want (or serve them with a bowl of salsa - maybe homemade mango salsa? easy: mango, purple onion, fresh lime juice, chopped chili (do a test to see how hot it is and how much you want to add!!) and a little cilantro if you don’t think it tastes like soap). so, put the beans and salsa, if using, in a little smear towards the bottom of the tortilla, fold that part over, then fold the sides in and continue to roll up so you have a self contained little tube, then pan fry (these are awesome for picnics, lunches, whatever - they’re so portable - and awesome for leftovers. we’ve put dahl, basmati and chutney in them, leftover stews boiled down, sliced apples with cinnamon, anything). after you’ve cooked them, let them sit a little bit so they settle, then, if you like, slice them in rounds and hold them together with a toothpick (if they need it) and serve with your mango salsa - yummy! beany! everyone likesy!

Wow, thanks for the burrito secret!

I won’t tell anyone.

We try not to eat honey, but often find maple syrup works just as well in most recipies.

I’d love the recipe for nanaimo bars! I don’t know exactly what they are, I just know they’re good!

mission impossible

i’m supposed to be doing work, but i will try to type the recipe out tonight, bit by bit, under the watchful eye of my ever suspicious sweetheart—who thinks i’m playing games or, ahem, online, whenever i’m on the computer (for good reason, i guess :D).

don’t knock the stuffed grape leaves, either. middle easter, greek, or import stores have big-assed tins of the things and they’re really, really good.

Oh, I won't knock the grape leaves!

Sometimes I buy a huge tub of them and that’s all I eat for lunch. Yum! But I hadn’t thought of them for the party. Our local middle-eastern deli (Emily’s Lebanese Deli, for anyone nearby) makes the most incredible tabbouleh I have ever had, I might as well get some of that while I’m there!

And don’t worry about typing that in tonight! My party’s not for several weeks! Back to work, you! [cracking the whip]

you could also go all 50’s and kitsch with things like pigs in a blanket (made with tofu dogs) and dill pickle dip for ripple potato chips, and nuts ‘n’ bolts.

i have recipes for all of those if you’re interested :)
