learn to swim (read all 3 entries…)
Woo, 25m! 3 years ago

Well, it means a lot to me, anyway :)

It’s going pretty well really: Had my 5th lesson tonight, managed a length of the pool. I’m due to start having 2 sessions a week starting on Saturday, since I’ve also signed up for the ‘12 week program’ as well now.

This includes a free pass to use the pool at any time during those three months, so it seemed a pretty good deal…

Swimming is great

and I admire you for doing this as an adult. I still can’t really ride a bike, but the last time I tried I broke my leg…so.

Thankyou!

I’m a bit new to 43t but I always value comments & discussion over cheers!

It’s been an interesting couple of months for me, so there are probably a few things I could say on ‘doing this as an adult’...

Besides the actual swimming, it’s been good for me to do something that forces me to say to myself, “I don’t know how to do this, I’m going to learn and I don’t give a damn who’s watching, or if I stumble along the way!

Ultimately, that’s what 43things is about, right?

It’s great, too, to realise that you’re in a room (well, pool) with other people who’ve made that exact same commitment to themselves: There really isn’t much fear left in anyone who’s managed to turn up to the first lesson (take the first step) and you don’t have to look far for encouragement.

It also makes you appreciate the other things that we normally learn as children and take for granted: It must really take Balls Of Steelâ„¢ for an adult to decide to learn to read, don’t you think?

And to think I’d have missed out on all of that if I’d learned to swim as a child instead of picking it as a goal for myself!

Might be time to try that bike again, eh? :)

the bike oh no!!!

I really have a poor sense of balance. It is true and I finally got over it. I mean if someone spins me around quickly I get so dizzy I can’t walk…
SO, I think the bike is out.

But I do know exactly what you mean about getting out of yoru comfort zone…that I try to take on regularly…just not on a bike. It’s a pity aboutthe bike because I like to run and swim, but no bike so I can’t do triathalons….
PS I;d cheer you, but the goblin took mine…and is holding them for ransom….

Ooops...

Actually meant to post the question about bikes here… My bad…

By the way, I am glad that you are going through proper lessons… I can just imagine the disaster when having a friend try to teach you. Taking lessons was the right way to go.

And even though you’ll be able to swim, if you ever go out somewhere, if they offer life vests, don’t feel bad about taking them. I went someplace in Cancun to look at coral reefs or something like that. I realized that treading water is actually quite exhausting! And no amount of swimming lessons would help in case of a leg cramp. (Fortunately, that didn’t happen to me.)

bikes

sure, what type of question jim???

When was the last time you tried riding a bike?

I can imagine it would be a traumatic experience to break your leg when you try… Seems like they should put warning labels on bikes.

There was an episode of Frasier where Frasier and Niles admitted they never learned how to ride bikes. Frasier said that whenever someone said the expression “it’s just like riding a bike”, he could only nod but only be able to grasp conceptually what they were trying to say…

great accomplishment!

where are you at now?

26m! ;)

I’ve just completed my first 12-week block on the more organised program.

This concentrates more on the various different strokes & techniques and basically builds confidence more quickly, I think.

I’m best at breast stroke at the minute, though my breathing isn’t great (everybody tells me that I don’t look very relaxed).

My front crawl needs a LOT more practice, too – There’s just too much to think about all at once, so I need more practice!

PyramidHead has gotten 6 cheers on this entry.
