or the element Einsteinium, but a couple of bacterial plasmids aren’t so bad, I guess. Unfortunately, they carry my married initials. I guess I’ll have to go back to the lab and manufacture some more now that I’m back to my maiden name…

What are bacterial plasmids, and how did you find them?

Additionally, plasmids can be passed from one bacteria to another (bacteria sex, basically), and in order to be copied and passed on to the next generation of bacteria, they have to be useful to their host. Generally, this means providing some sort of drug-resistance gene; this property makes them useful to humams when we want to create genetically engineered organisms.

You don’t “find” plasmids…they have to be carefully extracted before you can play with them, and that’s a process that takes while. Then, if it’s an undiscovered plasmid, you have the happy task of sequencing the DNA, running various tests, etc. It’s time-consuming work and demands a lot of patience.

Just my 2 cents…I have done quite a bit with plasmids over the past year and have learned all sorts of useless stuff about them. :D
