ride a bike
I can't ride a bike!

My parents refused to allow me to have one (too near main roads was their excuse!) & consequently I’ve never learnt to ride one properly. Despite living in Oxfordshire where everyone seems to have a bike!

My husband did buy one ‘for us both to use’ once – and of course it was too big for me & could hardly reach the pedals (i’m 5ft 2 – he’s almost 6ft!).

I did hire one once with a friend on holiday in Italy when I was about 19 – and did ride it – but only on a country lane & had to get off each time a car went past!

So – the first thing is to get a bike the right size…..do they come in different sizes? I know children’s bikes do..

They do come in different sizes

There are two areas you need to look at:

  • wheel height – this is the fixed height of the bike, I think there is a standard adult size, but you could go for a slightly smaller one which would mean the whole bike was smaller
  • height of the saddle and handlebars, there are adjustable within reason. You need to make sure the basic bike allows you to set these up properly.

Any shop or hire place should be able to help you get the right bike.

Cheers for this!!

I’m going to have to do some research…I’ll drag my son along with me when he’s home (he’ll think it’s hilarious!). Then look for a second hand one!
