i learnt that traders sometimes use a theory based on the fibonacci sequence to predict prices, in the stock market and stuff. And actually get taken seriously for doing so. Man that sounds insane. It seems like the trading version of “buy this cream and put it on your thighs and you will be a thin person”. To me it just seems hideous to think that people’s using money could recreate nature’s patterns. Please God no! Unless enough people used it and it became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Heeee, I’m intrigued. And wondering whether there are other sacred geometric witchcrafty (wondering, should I say “mathematicky”) type things being used on a daily basis that i didn’t know about. I mean, there’s probably all kinds of weird shit out there.

But the Fibonacci numbers? My insticts are pleading with me that this cannot be so.

I’m pretty sure thats pretty much exactly how the stock market works: People’s faith in a certain stock.

Now, sure it seems insane, but the more I’ve learnt (All be it very limitedly) about the stock market is that it really is just senseless mumbo jumbo most of the time.

eeeeh

have you had a brush with the stock market? I think it is so alien to me I should at least understand how it works and write the Normal Person’s Guide to Boring Stock Market Vocabulary or something.

I’m just amazed that the mumbo jumbo is what makes the world go round. Really. Gobsmackered. Or whatever it is you say back home.

When the company I work for went public a while back, I had a bit of a look into the whole thing, as did the rest of my team. Between us we gave up, there is so much of it that seems to be kept within “the city” every time you think you’ve found out a definition for a jargon word, the only answer has even more jargon you don’t know yet, each time you learn a rule for something, something happens that flies in the face of that, because of some exception.

I honestly belive that really nobody understands how it all works, they just bluff and run away when they have made enough money, before someone notices they just made it all up.

virtual high fives to you

I am coming to the same conclusion. You just have to learn the vocab, like a translation job, and it starts getting clearer.

As in “What a Pile Of Shite”

I guess it’s all about who can come up with the latest mad theory wrapped up in moneyspeak.

But I like to think these people really believe they are contributing to a better world. Ha! Do they sleep well at night? (okay they probably have Armani sheets freshly ironed by their cleaning lady, I need to find a better argument)

save comment has let me down again. I’m afraid you’ll be getting the short version (actually you are probably quite glad, haha)

I love the Fibonacci sequence idea, but as in how it applies to nature. The thought of applying it to the stock market is spooky. They tell us the stock market reacts to just about everything – earthquakes, terrorist attacks, Iran’s pitiful collection of centrifuges, or rather our reaction to them – so does that mean a stock market model built on Fibonacci-based predictions already factors all that stuff in?

You see, it’s almost a determinst thing for me. If it does factor it all in how would you know it wouldn’t be or become a self-fulfilling prophecy? Like that so called ‘Christian’ end-of-world index thing whose name escapes me. If it doesn’t, it’s fairly pointless because you’d have a whopping great task working in all the variables.

Unfortunately I haven’t played with one so I don’t know. But it is mildly intriguing me.

Maybe I should take up knitting or something instead.

wait there is even better

I saw there is a “Galactic Trader” program too! Financial astrology. That one is definitely trying to predict the future! arf. Planetary Support and Resistance lines, Planetary Price Predictors, Intraday Trading with the Moon…I am not making this up.

Oh my.

And is that what economists do? I’ve always wondered.
