The human attitude of which classical music is the expression is always the same; it is always based on the same kind of insight into life and strives for the same kind of victory over blind chance. Classical music as gesture signifies knowledge of the tragedy of the human condition, affirmation of human destiny, courage, cheerful serenity. The grace of a minuet by Handel, or Couperin, the sensuality sublimated into delicate gesture to be found in many Italian composers or in Mozart, the tranquil, composed readiness for death in Bach – always there may be heard in these works a defiance, a death-defying intrepidity, a gallantry, and a note of superhuman laughter, of immortal gay serenity. Let that same note also sound in our Glass Bead Games, and in our whole lives, acts, and sufferings.

Comfort of classical music

Certain classical music seems to touch into the sadness of the soul, at a time of grief. When my father died, I changed the radio station at work from a fairly lighthearted one, to a classical station. It seemed to ease the pain of trying to continue with normality and routine, when my heart was aching with loss.

On a lighter note, my favourite piece of classical music is still ‘Capriccio Italien’ by Tschiakovsky. I believe there may be a snobbery about classical music – in that learned intellectuals dismiss certain categories of the music, seeing it as not clever or serious enough. I haven’t a clue if Capriccio Italien falls into this looked-down-upon range, but I need to not give a damn – I just thoroughly enjoy it! It is has a range of moods within it, sombre and then lighthearted, and I confess that when I play it, I stand there, pretending to conduct – I’m sure it would be a wonderful piece to conduct!

I listen to Radio 3 a lot now. They play a surprising range of classical music including a lot of what might be termed light classical. I am beginning to enjoy the whole spectrum of serious music.

Thanks for your comment.
