learn yoga
first class

i took my first steps into yoga tonight. i’m fortunate enough that there is a free class going on for the next six weeks in my town. the girl that is teaching it has to do yoga for the community as part of the certification process. so… i went. i’ve been wanting to, right? so this was the time.

i was a little nervous… after all, i am not teeny in any sense. and i wasn’t sure what exactly to expect.

now that i’m reflecting on the class after it’s over, i think the class was very… calming. never before have i gone into a workout completely relaxed, come to a complete drenching sweat, and come back to completely relaxed within an hour.

of course, this is not how i felt during the class. it was hard. my muscles were struggling to keep the poses during some times… i could feel myself wavering. particularly the leg muscles during the triangle, warrior 2 and another one i can’t think of the name for. i was absolutely dripping sweat and i did have a few moments of thinking “i can’t do this.” but in retrospect, i actually feel pretty good about it. i was pretty close to being the chubbiest one there, but i was able to do more than quite a few people. particularly a skinny little thing right next to me. :)

so this is definitely worth pursuing further…

i may just need to go next week too.

Free classes?!

That’s awesome! And you’re doing the teacher a favor as well, since she could use the teaching practice. It’s a win-win situation.

Don’t worry about how you look (I’m not teeny either). Yoga is the ONE place where people really don’t go to be “seen” (like some gyms). They usually go because they are sincere about their practice. So typically there is no competitve atmosphere. Occasionally you’ll find one or two people who get caught up in that, but it doesn’t last (yoga knocks it out of them real quick!).

Continue and you’ll be amazed at what your body can learn to do! And remember that yoga can be playful too. :o) Don’t forget to chuckle to yourself should you fall out of a pose (Madonna said she fell all over the place in the beginning) or maybe laugh at a joke the teacher throws out to the class. Everything you learn in yoga is good for you both physically and mentally ~ why not have fun doing it?

PS. Standing poses like Triangle and Warrior kill my legs too.

i’m not little either…but when i am in yoga i focus on myself and what i can do. i love the focus that is required when you are struggling to keep a pose. or trying something new for a few moments and listening to your body when its time to go easy. even my teacher isn’t little, but she is amazingly strong. and she puts aromatherapy on our foreheads at the end of class.
