When I was in HS we played string quartets every year…or at least until our good viola and cello players graduated! Then we got stuck with violin quartets. Those were fun too, but they don’t quite have the same fullness (in my opinion) that real string quartets do. Those lower instruments add a lot.

That is a cool goal. ‘Tis something I’ve always wanted to do (write classical pieces), but haven’t enough aptitude for.
