How long did the initial setup process take you? I’ve read the book twice and am completely intimidated by the thought of collecting and processing my entire existence.
Thanks in advance for any/all pushes in the right direction.
The main part of getting started with GTD, which involved going through all of my papers and filing/tossing as necessary, took the better part of an evening. However, I didn’t have very many papers to start with. I also don’t have an office or even a desk to organize, so I don’t know how long it would take for you in your own situation.
That said, it really isn’t as bad as it seems, once you get started. If you get started and things are taking too long or you get tired, just take a break and finish on the next day. You’ll be okay :)
I’m pretty much drowning in papers, so the official advice to rip through everything in one go is totally paralyzing. I like your take a break and come back tomorrow approach much better.
Unfortunately, I tend to get distracted with the next project before I’ve finished the first one, so keeping myself coming back tomorrow may be difficult.
Well, the ideal situation is to finish it all in one go, but of course, reality does not always equal the ideal.
If you find that you keep getting distracted, you might want to clear some time and make an appointment on your calendar for this. Making it more official might help you remember to do it.
