get outside more (read all 2 entries…)
Hit the pool you say? 4 years ago

This is week two (the beginning of) of my goal to get outside more. So far I think I’m right on target. I’m throwing out some of my inhibitions about going outside alone (I know, its nuts) and even have hit the apartment complex pool twice on my own! That’s huge for me. I’ve enjoyed walks, lunches with friends, shopping (for much needed shorts and t-shirts for Florida), and even went and did a little miniature golf. The biggest though would be the walks and hitting the pool… both solo and both accomplished. I managed to get out of the house about four or five times last week, and this week is already off to a great start.

Let’s hope I can keep it up and mark this “to do” as DONE! :D

Hello

I found the photo “Bluefly”, beautiful. I think it’s a kind of Hymenoptera from the photo. Hymenoptera are bees wasps and ants. Can you check if it has two pairs of wings and if the two pairs stick together like velcro? If so it’s a Hymenoptera. Just curious. There’s a type of wasp called Eulophids that are reared in captivity and released in mass as a biological control. They are parasitoids of insect pest larva. I noticed you’re from Florida. I wonder if your blue fly was part of a pest control for fruit trees?

Hi Captain,

I had the image located in an entomology forum as well and they suggested it was a “sweat bee”. It does appear to have two pairs of wings together as you describe.

Hmmm

It looks like it has four front tarsi, that may make a difference.
(edit)
Tarsi are “toes”. If the front legs end with 4 Tarsi it may be a Eulophid which is far more interesting than a sweat bee. The tarsi will look like three “blobs” stuck to each other ending in a longer blob. I can see why they say it’s a sweat bee though.
(2nd edit) Thank you for posting this photo, it’s great. Does it not beg to be painted?!
