Shakespeare is definitely worth reading, but you can go your entire life without reading anything by him and still be okay :) There are better writers and there are worse writers, just don’t be afraid of reading Shakespeare before you actually do it.
It is doubtful any English speaking person goes his or her entire life without reading Shakespeare since many phrases and cliches in daily usage were created by him.

Right.
However, just because you know some phrases doesn’t mean you’ve read Shakespeare. If I weren’t an English major and forced to read Shakespeare I doubt I ever would have.
That wasn’t really the point of my post, either.
