Never stop learning (read all 3 entries…)
Vocabulary

I’ve been lazy lately to look up things in a dictionary. It happens a lot that one can “guess” what something means and move on (you know, the engineering way to do things; if it works, it’s enough) but I figure it’s usually not the best way to go. I find myself more often than not lacking the right word, and needless to say, those words are usually the ones that I have failed to learn when I had the chance to.

I’ll try writing down the new words and looking them up (and possibly using them). Just a tad more aggressive in learning, perhaps.

Another reason I love the Internet!

I can pop on here, click my “Favorites” button for dictionary.com, and look up words SO quickly and easily!

I used to do a lot of guessing from context, because I was too lazy to drag the Webster’s down from the shelf. The Net has been good for me, that way.

That's true...

if I’m at a computer I have also links to several dictionaries (Dictionary.com, Oxford, Cambridge, and recently added Merriam-Webster :)) on my bookmark toolbar for quick access. One thing though, you may call me old-fashioned, but I still think I can memorize things better when I write them down or look them up in a book (as opposed to a quick glance on the monitor screen). I guess the time we spend learning something has some effect on how much we value them. Perhaps I’m just not ready enough to absorb all the information that internet has to offer (at least at that rate).

Ahhh!

You are probably right about the trouble it takes having something to do with how well we learn.

When I look a word up (wherever I look it up) I follow a routine a teacher taught me in, I think, 7th grade: I first figure out which meaning of the word makes sense of the word where I’m trying to read it, then make up two sentences using the word, saying them both aloud.

Then it’s MINE.

Sounds great!

I’m definitely going to try that. Thanks a lot!

Thanks!

Just out of curiosity, what’s the alphabet you’re using? And what does it say (perhaps in native pronounciation)?
