Conor Oberst is a poet and a musician and deserves “fandom” for those things aswell as his singing, which is good in my opinion, not in the American Idol sense but in the fact that it helps to express the meaning in his lyrics.
I think you are right. He is really not much of a singer. But he is one of the most talented lyricists on the planet. I find that to be much more worthy of my admiration than someone who can simply sing.
