Become a computer programmer
Programming not for everyone. 3 years ago

It takes a special kind of person to enjoy programming. Not everyone has that spark. It is most definitely not a field to enter purely for the money. If you don’t have the desire, you will not enjoy it. Programming takes a lot of logical thinking and the ability to break down problems and solve the bits in order.

A quick test to see if you’ll enjoy programming is to think back to those little word problems in your math classes. Did you enjoy them? Was it a challege that you enjoyed completing? That’s the easiest correlation to programming, because in essence your job will consist of taking word problems from customers or your employer and devising solutions.

Just don’t listen to people who claim that programming is not worth it.

My best answer would be to remember that your courses are not there to teach you the language. Those courses are to provide you an understanding of syntax and proper program layout, which actually breaks down to simply problem solving.

Also, watch to see if you’re trying to jump in head first yourself. ;) If you’re opening up a compiler after reading what the program is supposed to do, you’re jumping ahead of yourself. Take some time to write out the problem on some paper, break it down into sections, then find out how you can solve those sections with java. And also remember it’s not out of bounds to use resources such as google to get a better grasp on ideas :D

If you have any other questions, you can send me an email at wbarnhill [at] lander.edu and I’ll offer whatever help I can.

It’s no problem at all. Besides, it’s on the job training for when I become a professor. :D
