dye my hair purple (read all 2 entries…)
Does bleaching your hair screw it up?

I am afraid of bleaching and dyeing it and then bleaching it again to do a different color… what do you suggest?

i'm not a hair expert, but...

after you bleach your hair, dye tends to fade out pretty quickly, especially with those semi-permanent manicpanic-ish dyes, so maybe you could just wait it out and then redye it without bleaching it again. i think bleaching is supposed to make hair more slippery or something. i used to have purple streaks, and i had to redye ‘em all the time…sigh…i miss having purple hair.

to be honest I thonk its really cool wit the streaks esp the teal ones

“Information is the enemy of uncertainty” Timothy K. Hamilton. I just made that up. Does that mean I can quote myself?

:D

Let us know how it goes!

I thought this photo would be fitting.

I dyed strands of my hair (electric) blue back in college

and have had purple more recently, and you don’t have to dye your hair to white to get purple, so it won’t damage your hair much. Blue is another stroy, unless the products available have totally changed, which is entirely possible.

I’m with Timothy on this one, get more info from your hairdresser, that’s key. You need a hairdresser that’s a real artist, (and a mad scientist) ya know, who’ll get the shade just right.

It might be worth the money to have it done by a professional

I know paying a professional for a radical hairstyle clashes with the rebel punker DIY aesthetic, but there it is.

I don’t know anything about hairdressing (and maybe that’s my point), but I did my hair myself. I used the strongest bleach I could find (since have very dark coarse hair). It made my eyes water and my scalp burn, and I took it off before the time was up—I couldn’t take it anymore. My hair usually has nice curls, but after bleaching it got even coarser and stiffer.

My experience, do it yourself...

but keep the phone# (for a pro) nearby!

I’ve been bleaching my hair out to a very light blonde myself the last 2 summers on my own. Went dramatically lighter last year. Was concerned that I’d need to strip off the previous color but didn’t I do it—no problems anyway luckily. Did let my hair get pretty dirty before I did it – been told that this helps it ‘take’?

Keep it pretty short but it feels far healthier now than when I just got perms (no color). Am pretty good about conditioning so maybe that’s it. Don’t know.

It’s fun if you’ve got the time. Never know how it will end up but it’s usually repairable by someone who knows what they’re doing.
