My brother and I went to India, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. It was an amazing experience…backpacking is such a good time to learn about yourself. The isolation (of being a foreigner) allows time for deep reflection.

Hi! I have a question for you!
Hi!
It’s funny when I saw your message because my cousin and I have the same plans- I mean, Actually the same countries cept substituting Laos for Vietnam!
I was wondering if you could give me tips on how to prepare for it. We want to start in India first, and then make our way over to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Did you get visas for all the countries beforehand, or are they on a pretty well-known backpackers route that we can just get our visas directly at the embassies in the countries?
Also, how did you travel to each country, are there trains or buses? Did you have to fly from India to the next country? I really just wish there’s an alternative to flying to each country, but I’m pretty inexperienced with the details of getting into each country.
If you could even e-mail me about this- that would be great! I seriously thank you for even taking the time to read this and help!
Sincerely,
TheHy
How exciting! I can give you plenty of tips. You will need a VISA for India beforehand. You will need to mail your passport in to the embassy in Washington DC (here I realize I’m assuming American????-because this also is different for other countries). So you need to allow time for this. When are you plannning this trip? Do you know which places (cities) that you’d like to visit? And how long will you be traveling? Most likely you won’t need a visa for Thailand (depending on the length of time you plan on staying), and as for Cambodia, you can get the visa either at the border (easy) or in Bangkok.
We flew in to Mumbai, India from France. I’m not sure where your starting destination is. My brother and I were leaving from the states, but found it was cheaper to fly from LA into London, and then out of Paris to Mumbai (rather than flying in from the opposite direction). We flew on Air India. In India we used mostly trains, but also buses to move around. We flew out of Delhi to Bangkok. Between Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia we used both trains and buses to move around in and between these countries. Check out Airbrokers.com for flights.
How wonderful!
Yes, I am from the U.S. I’m actually going to be in Vietnam for a while before I go to India- but Vietnam is where I’m leaving from- around Mayish. I think I am planning a trip soon down to Washington D.C., since I might have to finalize VISA things for Vietnam, but I’m not sure if I have enough time to get a VISA for India, unless it takes less than 2 days (that’s how long I plan on being in the D.C. area)
Yeah, it’s a prett complicated situation. I guess I didn’t even mention that I’m going to South Korea soon in January, before all of this. Then I’m staying in Vietnam til May. So, I wonder… is it possible to apply for a VISA for India while I’m in Vietnam? I’m not really sure how any of this works- does every country have an embassy for other countries? Is that the way it works? If so, I could take a deep breath and just worry about the India VISA while I’m in Vietnam- since I’ll be in Vietnam for a good 4 months… plenty of time to work on that VISA.
ughhh, VISAs are so complicating!! Thanks for the tips though! I’ll definitely look on Airbrokers for a flight from Vietnam to India. Then, it sounds like the other countries would just be easier to take trains and buses through… so that’s what I’ll try to do, and hopefully make my way back to Vietnam!
