lose 43 pounds

Probably the best way to do this would be to lose a different pound 43 times.

Lifting weights

I think getting stronger is the best thing to do. There is so much evidence now that dieting doesn’t work. For most people “exercise” doesn’t do much better. But if you get stronger, you’ll find your metabolism increases, your body feels better, and your ability to do things increases. I bet you’ll lose weight, but that is mostly ancillary to these other effects. I think the fastest way to get stronger is with weight training, and the best way to do that is infrequently and intensely. You’ll want to be careful with your heart in getting started, and would be best off working with a physical therapist or trained “personal trainer”.

The book that best outlines the approach I’m thinking of is The Power of 10.

Having lost weight and gotten stronger myself, the biggest thing I’ve noticed is you don’t do it until you really want to, and you don’t keep it up any easier. It’s a weekly “exercise” for me to go lift weights and I mostly do it because I want to see my kids grow up.

Josh Is Right

You need to increase your metabolism. Throughout middle school and high school I was a wrestler. My soph year in high school I had to get down to 98 pounds several times a week. I starved myself. Well I hit puberty and grew a few inches and started to gain weight. A lot of weight. I eventually was over 200 pounds and I am only 5’4. My problem was my metabolism.

I have been around 135-140 since. I did it by working out with weights as Josh suggested, not buying food I shouldn’t eat, and by eating less more often. I’ve moved from weights to mountain biking, but I am maintaining a weight, not trying to lose weight.

BTW: The not buying food you shouldn’t eat is key. If I had chips or candy in my house I’d eat it all right now. I just don’t buy it. It is easier to be “strong” at the store then it is once the stuff is in your house.

Down Eight - 35 to go

I’m eating less and getting more exercise – I just had a physical and a treadmill test and will now be a little more aggressive in my work out.

Down Thirteen - Thirty to go

With some lapses, I’ve given up ice cream and most sweets.

tv

Wow -- this is great

I didn’t realize you were actively pursuing this 43 pounds goal until I checked the comments. How are things going currently?

Another sugar hound

Sugars are my downfall, too. But I urge you not to think in those terms – “given up” ice cream. Keeping that promise has proved to be too hard for me.

Thirteen pounds off is great stuff! I’m using you as a role model.

I'm down 19

maybe we can help each other out. what about all those walks we keep talking about? I’ve been keeping to a very low calorie diet and cooking up a storm – experimenting on John a lot with recipes from Cooking Light magazine. Mybe you and Bonney want to come over for dinner? You can play with the dog…
