I frequently find myself working with or for people from international locations, and feeling not only “out of the loop” per se when they are talking in a language I cannot communicate in (I speak English and a fair amount of Spanish), but also ashamed at the American view of other languages and lingual education. Most people I have met in these situations speak three or more languages fluently, and an American who can speak even one language above and beyond English is rare in my experience.
