Amazing!

I had a fantastic time in Prague over the weekend. I just fell in love with this place. So of course, I want to go back now :-)

Very!

The people there are very friendly and they all speak English. In fact, in Prague, most signs are bilingual Czech-English. They do like it when you try a few words of Czech though :-)

Yes and somewhat

They are quite friendly…but hardly any one speaks English. The only people who could understand minimal English are the waiters in the restaurants(esp in the tourist area) and people who works in the hotel or work in the tourism industy, e.g tour guide.

I have a feeling that Bruno didn’t spend enough time to shop around ;)..as you will have hard time finding people who can speak English…I have had problem even to find dry or oily hair shampoo, and no body seems to understand what’s e diff.

I finally ended up buying some shampoo which till today I still have no idea what it was meant for :P..But I bought it mainly because it’s in Czech language(as a souvenior as I like to see things or product in their own language since we don’t really have things like that here). There’s no bilingual explanation on the bottle unlike other countries that I have been to!

And the only few bilingual signs I saw was in restaurants, and only in some better known restaurants..we had to even ask if they have English menu first before entering because we didn’t want to end up eating some unknown things lol

I actually bought some bread from their local store too but had no idea what it was since it was in Czech language but it did taste good ;P

My observation is that there’s really hardly anyone speaking or understanding English because everything is in Czech language including their T.V program(all dubbed in Czech) too!

Czech vs English

It’s funny because I had completely the opposite experience last week. I’ll grant you that I was only there for two days but I found that everybody I talked to spoke English and bilingual signs were everywhere. Then again, this was the touristy part of Prague so it may be different in other areas. It might also have changed over the past few years, especially since the Czech Republic became part of the European Union. As for the TV being only in Czech, I would expect that: if you go to France, the TV will be in French and in Italy it will be in Italian and they will dub everything.

1989

Yes indeed, I’m sure it was completely different back then! But even now, with all the tourists, it’s a great place to go to.

Oh

I was only there 2 yrs ago, not 20 yrs ago ;) I was still in my primary or secondary school during that time lol

Bruno, did you have friends that speak English to you during your 2 days tour and perhaps led you into thinking that everyone speaks English? Prague is one of the few cities I was feeling abit frustrated because no one seems to understand any English =) And ya, I have been to most European countries so I do know the language “situation” there (including their T.V.) and I do take my time to observe their cultures when travelling :)

You can’t compared France and Italy to Czech because Czech Republic is still not a very gobalised country and the language is not popular at all. Unlike French or Italian whereby it can still be understood by “foreigners”.

Bruno Girin has gotten 8 cheers on this entry.
