This is not going that well. I think the goal really should be “go to bed earlier” as my body really wants 8 hours.

I also struggle with getting up early – I just hate it. My natural body clock is to be up at night and sleep in late but I do not always have the luxury of doing that.
What helps me is…. setting the timer on the television to “go on” at a certain time. For some reason, I seem to respond to hearing the television come on whereas the radio often doesn’t phase me – no matter how loud. See if your tv has this capability.
Another thing you might try… my sister sleeps very deeply and I bought her a Progression alarm clock from the Hammacher-Schlemmer website. It has several different types of sounds, progressively increases the intensity of light, and warms up fragrances to induce your sense of smell all to help you wake up. The chirping birds drive her (and her cats) crazy in the morning and help her get up.
