How to clean out my closets
How I did it: I have been putting off cleaning out my closets for approximately five years (since I bought my house.) But now I am moving to a new house, so I decided to embrace the opportunity to sort out all the items I have collected over the years. I buy a lot of clothing that I very often never wear, so I thought I would sort things out into four piles: what I want to keep, stuff that needs to be thrown out, items that my friends/family might want, and items that I would donate to my church's rummage sale. I have three walk-in closets, all of which were stuffed, so it took me quite a while, since I was also packing up other things to move. It was kind of a bother to sort through everything instead of just packing it all in boxes, but I was able to get rid of a lot of items, and didn't have to move as much to my new house. And I also am now planning a clothing exchange party at my new house, so my friends can all come and exchange items that they don't want, for other things they do want!
Lessons & tips:
- Buy some large rubber "tubbies" at Lowes or Target. I labeled each one, and then folded my various clothing and put it in the appropriate container.
- Tags with strings are great to label and attach to the hangers of items that can't be folded up, but must be left on hangers. That way, they are easier to sort out later on.
