How I did it: I found a beginner's training plan online and started following it. I stuck to it religiously until I got injured and I had to cut back for about two months. That made the whole thing a lot harder and more painful, I think! But finally I got some treatment and orthotics and I was able to pick up training again. I did as much as I could in the final month and a half, and then I just persevered. The experience was exciting, fun, difficult, painful, challenging in unexpected ways, and more fulfilling than I can possibly explain.
Lessons & tips: Take long enough to train and build up your miles slowly so as not to get injured. Follow an approved plan. If you do get injured, seek medical attention as soon as possible. Go straight to a sports medicine doctor if possible ~ try to find one who specializes in running injuries. It is well worth it. If you do not get injured, make sure to follow your plan all the way through, long runs and short runs. I'm sure my experience would have been improved if I had done so.

Trauma_Junkie is really ready for Memorial Day!
You are officially my hero for at least a month.
and now that you are not so focused on the Marathon, how about joining Little Terry and myself and a few others, on the Daily Mile?
You did good!
Spyrunner I can't seem to give away all my cheers
is awesome. You are now one of the 2% that have run a marathon.

I was surprised to see this pop up in my inbox this morning. It feels so long ago that I completed this goal; it’s a nice reminder that I was once awesome. ;P And that I am part of the 2% as well as the 99% and the 47% who will vote for Obama (but not the 47% who don’t pay taxes, unfortunately. I have received “handouts” before, though, so maybe I AM part of the 47%. So confused!)
TSE Submerge yourself in happiness...
More power to you…cheers~

I only ran one. :) I had the goal “run another marathon” but I gave it up. I don’t have the energy or time to put into training right now, although I enjoy doing half marathons and find them much more reasonable in terms of the amount they consume my life during training! I don’t know why this is coming up again in my recent entries feed. Maybe Spyrunner triggered it by commenting, or maybe it mysteriously reappeared for some other reason.

You could be 100 years old, and you coud still run a marathon, like Fauja Singh.
I am currently prepairing a marathon, and I found your story very helpful. Thanks.
