How I did it: Four girls went for a friend's 40th birthday. We shared beds and rooms to keep the cost down but found a lovely reasonable and very central hotel on West 77th St and Broadway.

Lessons & tips: Try and find as much free stuff to do as you can. Go out late, because in some bars on some nights, the beer gets cheaper the later the hour! Ride the subway, it's a must. The view from the top of the Rockerfella centre is stunning and even better than the view from the top of the Empire State building.
