How to give blood
How I did it: School blood drive. I just signed up... it takes forever but it gets you out of class! They have to test your blood for iron so if you want to be able to do it, make sure you eat iron-rich foods for a while before you plan to donate. The first test I didn't have enough iron! The second I was JUST at the exact level I needed. Pricking your fingers for that is the suckiest part, but it's fast. Don't bother going if you're sick, they turned people away for coughing.
Having the blood drawn wasn't bad. I don't remember the needle hurting. It only took about 6 minutes for my bag to fill. It's wicked neat to see (unless you're squeamish, then don't look!) I didn't have any issue with feeling faint. I felt really great actually, but some guys twice my size were passing out all over the place. It affects people differently! Don't worry about it, just let the people running the show take care of you. They made me sit down and eat for a while anyway. If you feel faint I'm sure you can tell them and they'll make you lay down so you won't fall or anything.
A+ experience, will donate my O+ blood again.
Lessons & tips: Don't go if you're sick.
Eat food with iron beforehand.
It might be a REALLY long wait.
Don't worry about the needles or fainting. The people are experienced and even if you are uncomfortable, it's only for a few minutes.
Go with your friends.
