How I did it: I knew that by letting go of trinkets, books, clothes I never wore, multiple pairs of shoes, etc. I could then do OTHER things with my life. I knew that I wouldn't have to be bound to a certain job or income to maintain a SIMPLE lifestyle since almost everything I own now fits in my messenger bag!

Lessons & tips: Be ruthless. Sell it. Junk it. Donate it.

Give it away to a friend - it will make them smile. And if you REALLY can't live without it, at least you know you can probably borrow it back (I never did!)

Leave your credit card at home - You can't BUY anything and add to your clutter!

Good Advice

I saw an interview with a man recently who similarly downsized. He built a house for himself that has like an 84 square foot footprint. His bed was in a loft, and the bathroom was a combined toilet and shower. He now builds similar houses for other people.

I wish I could bring myself to do something like this, but I like my collections too much.
