How I did it: After I left school, I found it was a lot harder than I originally thought to get a job, and when I went back to college, I hated it and dropped out, leading me back to my jobsearch.
Now, free-time plus computer generally equals gaming. So, over time, while fruitlessly applying for jobs and attending interviews, I got into gaming and my knowledge of and about the subject generally built up.
So, a month or so ago, I sent out 3 CVs all to different 'Game' branches. One called back offering me an interview and I was ecstatic. But, unfortunately, a couple of weeks later, they sent me a routine rejection letter.
A week or so after that, one of the other branches called back, offering me another interview, which I attended. This was last Thursday. And yesterday morning, they called back telling me I'd been successful and I begin training today ^^!

Lessons & tips: Try to get the manager's attention.
For example, I was applying for a job in Game, and drew a short comic with Soap MacTavish and Ghost (COD) on the back of the envelope with my CV and cover letter.
I don't know if that actually helped my case, but it stands out more than a plain envelope =].

Write a cover letter. *glares*
