SlayneB is back again on 43 things.
What detailed, well written, sage advice. thank you.
How I did it: Physical fitness is one of the last things I make an effort on in life. When I was approached by friends to run, I considered it a joke even though they seemed rather adamant. I told them I would give their training method a try and time would tell. Somehow, it became serious and I became profoundly terrified.
I followed a training procedure to go from someone who never did any physical activity beyond what was necessary to get from one place to another, to someone who had the endurance and strength to pull through and finish. Each week I would jog and/or walk a certain number of days, increasing each week my distance and endurance. When I began, I could hardly jog more than 20 feet before I became winded. By the end, I couldn't believe I could go such a distance and still be on my feet.
I made certain to have water on hand at all times and to eat the proper food before running so I wouldn't be weighed down or run out of energy halfway through. I am still far from any pro at jogging or health, but I learned so much about my personal health and fitness through the experience.
I spared what money I could on a pair of good running shoes and proper running attire. I wanted to do it as best as I could manage and I found having quality gear a necessity.
Of course, I didn't do perfectly at training. I missed days and wasn't quite as well off as I should have been. Three weeks before the marathon I possibly broke my toe, then a week before I came down with a cold. I had already signed up and had a flight booked, so there was no going back. I dealt with the setbacks as best I could and by the time the half marathon day came, I made certain I would try as hard as possible.
I spent a lot of time wondering how I would ever make it as I counted through the miles, but it happened. I made it through and crossed the finish line spectacularly beside the friends who somehow convinced me to be there in the first place. I had never felt so sick or so accomplished.
I finished, and I proved to myself that I could accomplish a goal that seemed so untouchable. I ended the experience in probably the best physical shape of my life, and learned so very much about myself. My strengths, my weaknesses, and just how far I can truly go in life when I put forth real and honest effort.
Lessons & tips: Keep training. Keep going. Don't slack. Every day set for training will help you. Take care of yourself. Eat well. Drink water. Wear proper shoes. Listen to your body if develops any problems. Make sure you do whatever you can to keep your body as safe as possible. Believe.
