happy.

"it was exciting to see old moving images of family members (some i never knew) and to preserve them for future generations."

How I did it: i used two film processing companies, one for developed film and one for reels which had never been developed, and a third company for digitizing vhs tapes (a side project i lumped into this one). see "lessons & tips" and "resources" for details.

Lessons & tips: think long-term when dealing with family memories on old film stock which may be decaying by the year. pay a little extra for high-quality transfers. get high-definition computer files and an archive format with a long shelf life (like minidv) in addition to your ease-of-use dvds. do it well now while you have the chance, and futureproof as much as possible.

spread the computer versions around. copy them to your hard drive. put them on dropbox. make offsite backups. distribute copies to family. etc. etc.

if you're going to have a lot of large files shipped back to you, ask whether you can send your own usb hard drive for the company to use. i payed far too much for one bought from them, and could have saved by getting one from amazon.

finally, upload copies to youtube and alert as much of the family as you can, to gather people's memories about them. i'll be putting together a final chronologically-ordered dvd to share at the family reunion, and will probably create a commentary track with what i've been told about the people and events depicted. hope someone enjoys it in 50 years!
