"Switching off the television was just about as liberating as quitting smoking. "
How I did it: I just stopped watching! It helped to pack the TV up and put it out of the way - so it would be an effort to watch, not just a reflex.
Eventually, when I felt ready, I got rid of the set altogether, and I was really pleased with all the extra space it cleared up!
Lessons & tips: Don't believe for a second that you'll be bored, or out of touch, or that you won't have enough other stuff to do - my life has been more interesting, more full, and more active since I turned off.
It definitely helps that I live alone and have autonomy over my space - but even if you can't get a significant other or housemate to buy into the TV-free lifestyle, you can probably negotiate a TV-free night a week.
Resources: I use my computer to watch DVDs, I read papers and the internet to keep up with news, and I listen to music on my ipod when I need something in the background.
