How to change all my documentation over to my married name
How I did it: First, I had to get all of my documentation in order, including a certified copy of our marriage license from the courthouse, my original social security card, original birth certificate, car title, etc. From there, I started at the social security office to get my new card. Then, it was on to the DMV for a new driver's license. Once I had my new license, I got my car insured in the state of CT. Then, it was back to the DMV to re-register my car, get a new title, and new plates. In between, I changed the information on my health insurance cards, and opened new bank accounts after closing all my old ones. I requested new credit cards with my married name as well. FINALLY, after four long months, I am finished!
Lessons & tips:
- Take as much documentation and information with you to each office as possible
- Be prepared to WAIT a LOT
- Have originals or notarized copies of your documents
- Take your own pen to the DMV!
