How I did it: Be consistent.  You must, or interest will keep piling up.  It is discouraging to look at a statement and see how much you are paying in interest versus actual cost.  Always pay more than the minimum on a credit card, if you cannot pay the entire bill monthly. 

You must determine the difference between wants and needs.  Frugal spending on only necessities is key. 

Lessons & tips: Live below your means, or you'll never get out alive.  Don't try to keep up with the Jones', because they are swimming in debt too (you just can't see it) with their fancy cars, clothing, etc.
