How to finish a triathlon
How I did it: I did a beginners' triathlon: The Day at the Beach triathlon in Hermosa Beach, which includes swimming 1/4 mile in the ocean, 10 miles on the bike and a 3 mile run. The organizers and competitors were extremely supportive! I felt very safe the whole time, and I really appreciated the encouragement. I'm proud of my body for meeting the challenge! :-)
Lessons & tips: * This is a physical challenge, but it's also a huge MENTAL challenge. It's not just about the distance. You have to know how to motivate yourself and how to keep your thoughts positive, especially in the ocean.
* Be aware that you're going to spend a little money on your tri gear. You don't have to have top of the line stuff, but you have to be able to trust your equipment.
* Transitions can be more stressful than the events themselves! Set out everything you'll need in advance with a check-list.
* Go easy on yourself if it's your first race. Look for little moments to relax. Have fun!
Resources: * Ocean 101 (ocean swimming safety class), offered by the L.A. Tri Club. Great course. Great teachers. Great experience. It was a life saver for me. Don't go in the ocean without it.
* Running shoes with shock absorbers
