"Think about what it would be like to sleep under the stars, cook meals over a fire, wake up to the sounds of the birds and spend very little money - and you've got just a small taste of what it's like to live off the land."
How I did it: We bought a large Cabela's tent (15x30 ft) and went up to 20 acres undeveloped family heirloom land. It took a couple months of prep because we were also planning to live off the land... (starting the garden, building a platform, ect.) but it still wasn't enough. We were moving off of a boat at the time, so we coming from a very different circumstance. I would definitely do it again, and would change a lot the next time, but I don't regret it. It was the best experience I've ever had (thus far!).
Lessons & tips: Protect yourself! Watch out for the bugs you'll encounter, depending on where you are, they could be deadly. I was bit by a Black Widow while I was tenting, luckily though, I knew what to do and how to identify it. I did not have a horrific reaction, but my left arm was in pain for about two months. Learn about how to identity certain pest and animals, and know when it's an emergency!
Also, READ, READ, AND READ SOME MORE! Anything you can get your hands on about tenting, living on the land, ect.
And also, don't expect a romantic ideal. Of course it's a beautiful experience, but you'll still have to deal with cooking, finding or making clean water, cleaning your clothes, washing dishes, and how to use the "restroom".
Resources: Cabela's was a great resource for the tent itself (great quality), but it's an investment (some cost up to $1000), so be sure it's what you want to do.
Other than that- the library! And free internet cafes.
