How to travel to Afghanistan
How I did it: In March 2005, I traveled with the Global Exchange delegation 'Women Making Change' to Afghanistan for an Independent Study Project in photography. I returned to Afghanistan in March 2007, as a volunteer for the NGO Afghans4Tomorrow, teaching English and photographing in the A4T girl's schools. GX hires local guides who speak the language and live in the country. Our guide Najib lived thru the Soviet invasion and Taliban rule. He was very cognizant about what is safe and what is foolhardy but we were out and about not holed up behind the walls of an NGO or embassy. Guesthouse was in a local neighborhood.
GX is not cheap $1750. which doesn't include airfare. If you can't afford that route you might want to consider volunteering with a small NGO like Afghans4Tomorrow. I volunteered to teach English in exchange for room and board.
