How to get a second job
"Volunteering pays off"
How I did it: I started as a volunteer, but after a month, I got the job! I am very happy working and being productive, although the hours and the pay aren't so good. I enjoy working with the kids and the parents plus I get free rein with a lot of things, which is cool.
I got so depressed after losing my job last May. I was unemployed for months and refused to be on the dole. I am capable and I can learn new things but I just couldn't understand why some employers wouldn't even consider me for an interview. Maybe I sounded so desperate and my depression shows in the way I write my resumes/cover letters.
Lesson learned...
Lessons & tips:
- Keep trying and be patient
- Do something else in the mean time, try volunteering to establish new networks/references (I got my job this way) plus it looks good on paper
- Never ever feel sorry for yourself and never lose hope - because it shows and employers will not hire a person who does not respect herself.
- Be confident, sell yourself and your skills but not too much
- Pray or meditate, talk to a friend. Relax your mind and reduce stressors, eat healthy.
- Choose great references - because at the end of the day, if your reference was a lying hateful witch, you will never get the job!
Resources: Volunteering NZ
Public Library including books helped me learn new things, developed new hobbies to ward off boredom and reading about biographies of people who'd made it motivated me to try harder, library books on writing CV and interview skills are good too. The public library also held useful workshops like career counselling and CV writing.
