How to be a banana for halloween by zombiegrrl

How I did it: 1. measured myself, front and side x 2

2. purchased 2.5 yards of yellow felt, 1/3 yard of blue felt
3. decided my costume should consist of 4 costumes. sewed three panels together first.
4. stitched in floral wire into two seams in hopes that it would help create the curve of a banana.
5. attached the back panel with glue gun.
6. sewed the bottom of the banana together and stuffed it with batting to create a banana-like form.
7. gathered the top of the banana and glue felt around it to create the stem.
8. glued a square piece of felt on the bottom part of the banana for the other end.
9. cut out a face hole and arm holes.
10. bent a wire hanger into an upside U shape and glued it around the face hole to keep the top from falling backwards.
11. stuffed the top of the suit with batting and attached it with felt and safety pins.
12. paint in the details on the banana. used gold (for brown) and green paint to make it more realistic looking.
13. cut the blue felt to the shape of the chiquita sticker. painted on the type with white acrylic paint, and used yellow puffy paint for the yellow parts.

The suit wasn't perfect: I wanted to wear it with my head sticking out of the costume otherwise it got kind of annoying, so I had to hold up the top of the suit during photo ops. I was surprised that people still recognized what I was when I didn't hold it up; I thought I resembled a yellow pepper. The chiquita label definitely helped!

Lessons & tips: DON'T wait til the last minute like I did. Although I gave myself three days, I barely made it for my event Saturday evening because I still couldn't figure out how to keep the top of the suit up. I didn't puffy paint the chiquita label til minutes before we left my friend's house so you could still see the black marker I used to outline the drawing. I also had to blowdry the thing so it came out all bumpy. 

Not bad for a "last minute" job, though I would definitely have started earlier to make room for mistakes. Also, I wish I used wire coat hangers to line the suit. The floral wires didn't do anything!
