How to go rock climbing
"I pushed past my fears and it was amazing."
How I did it: I got a gift certificate for my husband that was good for an intro session for two people. This way, I knew I'd actually do it. My husband isn't afraid of heights, so he wouldn't chicken out - and I'd already paid the money.
I'm stubborn and have really high standards for myself. I decided to use this to help face my fear. The first wall I tried, I gave up only about 6 feet up. My husband knew how scared I was and so did the instructor. They both gave me encouragement, but didn't pressure me. I felt like I hadn't really earned the encouragement, because I hadn't pushed myself very hard. I decided on the next wall to just go one more step up when I felt like stopping. Before I knew it, I was at the top! I repeated this on two more walls and felt amazing.
Lessons & tips: We went during the work day so that the climbing gym wouldn't be too crowded. I was worried about looking foolish in front of others, so this helped a bit with that.
Just focus on what's in front of you, not on what is below. Remember that you can rest when you need to. The harness is there to hold you and it's OK to just hang there for a bit. It's not as scary as it sounds.
Resources: Look online for local climbing gyms.
