How to start or join a book club.
How I did it: The problem was time, and finding like minded people with almost same interests..
Well.. The World Wide Web provided me with the solution!
I joined a group on Goodreads.com, dedicated for my Favorite author Naguib Mahfouz (a reading circle).
It took me a while to get used to the site and start reading regularly to post reviews on it. Shortly after, I started to engage with its groups. I realized then that this Mahfouz group is one of the least active, even it's own moderator left it!
And since Mahfouz is one of my favorites, and since I was intending to read all his books anyway, so it was the perfect chance, because I already have all of the author's
books (or about to complete the collection), so I knew this is one book club where I
will never miss a session, nor be unsatisfied with the book selection :D
I decided to work on this group with no more than 30 member (which is very small 4 a social network) and turn it into a real book club.
And I did it!
Now we read a book per month, we're still in the beginning, but my group (now 41 member after 2 month and 2 moderators) is preparing for it's third discussion. Participation rate is not so high, but participants are great! And I decided to work with whatever I have! Even if it was only me and a second member!
In the future, we might consider real-life meetings.. But for now I'm satisfied with our happy reading, great online discussions, and wonderful spirit among members... :D
I finally have a book club :D
------
P.S.:
With all the excitement, I forgot to say that I'm also member of 2 great online book cubs on the same website.. But I'm not very active in them coz it's hard to find the books they discuss in my local bookstore or online. However, following there discussions about subjects of interest to me is a delight!
Lessons & tips: No matter for how long you think you're alone, and can't find someone who shares same interests with you.. Think again.. With the Internet you can find all resources you need and great people who are looking for the same thing you're looking for.
Make the most out of that!
