How I did it: I met this woman through a friend of mine, and while we were chatting casually it came out that we were both available for long term relationships. I thought about it, and even though I was actually feeling kind of anti relationship at the time, I figured I might as well enjoy her company. So I made the decision, got up the guts, and asked her out. She said yes right away. I made it a point to get money from the atm and be all showered etc well before the date, so little could go wrong. Since I am from another town, some friends gave me advice on where to take her. It was very casual, since we were friendly  acquaintances already, and I am friends with her roommates. I really didn't know how it was going, but at the end, I squeezed her hand and she accepted that pretty readily, so I took that as a good sign. I saw her later that weekend and it became clear we should continue seeing each other.

Lessons & tips: Have courage, ask folks out even if you're not sure you might be interested in them. be ready for the date well in advance, clean out your car the day or two before, shower with plenty of time, take out more than enough money from the bank (if you are going to spend any. when the check comes is not the time to find out your debit card doesn't work.)  basically make sure everything that can be done by the night before is done, then get a good rest.
