"A PhD is the only time in my life I could study one topic of my choice and know more about it than anyone in the world--but the most important things I learned were about myself."
How I did it: In the end, things got really frustrating--to finish and write a science dissertation takes way more time then everyone estimates. In the end I missed a deadline, but in the end it was a much better thesis because of the next few months I spent on it.
Also, I had to do it in my own way. Not everyone works in the same way. So I had to learn if all my colleagues could lock themselves at home for three months, and concentrate solely on their diss 18 hours a day, that didn't mean it was the best method for me.
Lessons & tips: The worst thing I think I did was try to fulfill everyone else's expectations. In the end, my diss belongs to me. Also, if you have disagreements with advisors, it's important to talk those out well in advance with a trusted person before things get out of hand.
