How to do NaNoWriMo by raindropletshine

"truly awesome experience"

How I did it: I heard about it from a blog last year when someone was participating, and bookmarked it on my calendar.  I joined on Oct 31st and began writing on Nov 1st. 

I've always wanted to write a novel.  Because of the deadline, it forces you to write without thinking too much, allowing all your creativity to just flow out.  

It's a long exhausting month, and sometimes you won't think you'll finish, but everything is possible, in the last four days I wrote over 30,000 words.  

Lessons & tips:

Even if you've never written before but have always wanted to, just join and try.  Go on, bookmark your calendar for next year.  I'm going to!

Resources: National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is 30 days in November where thousands of people from all over the world pour billions of words into novels.  You are awarded a winner's certificate if you reach 50,000 words by Nov 30th.  


There are support groups and forums on there that can help you if you get stuck, need encouragement, or just need to procrastinate.

Strangely enough, I didn’t know what it would be about when I started. I just got this first sentence in my head, and it just took off from there. It wasn’t until I was about 5000 words in that it started taking on some structure. Probably not the best way to write, but I didn’t have a clue what I was doing…

It was almost like I was watching a movie, and I just wrote down what I saw until I was too tired, and paused it. It was an amazing experience.

That is so cool.

I imagine having it all mapped out before you start would make it far less interesting a process.
