How I did it: I made a decision on which degree, shopped schools and prices, made a decision, enrolled, changed my major 2 x and then went for it and didn't look back.  I set aside evenings, lunch hours and weekend for school, gave up a social life and focused all my energy on learning and honing my paper writing skills.

Lessons & tips: Determine what please your instructor and write to that.
Shop both online and on ground schools for curriculum, accreditation and price.  I found the program I needed at www.apus.edu for a very good price with the best accreditation possible.
Buy textbooks secondhand if possible
Ask for letters of recommendation while still in class (I didn't do this till the end)
Monitor the market for your field and join a related group if possible while still in school
