How I did it: I listened and learned songs in the language for pronunciation. Also to get used to speaking the language.
Also i used various sites to learn words and phrases that were useful to me, and can use everyday.
Livemocha can be extremely useful. But i recomend learning how to read the languages script first because it helps a great deal.

Don't over crowd yourself with too much information at once. Take it a little at a time. And once you move on to more things, make sure you go over what you had previously learned to make it stick to your memorie. Eventually it will become second nature.
There are days that you might not feel like studying. That's fine. But you must go over what you have learned in your head. Saying it out loud also helps. 

And last but not least, don't give up.
