How to brush my pets' teeth daily
How I did it: Last spring I took my pets for long overdue exams, only to find out that one of my cats had gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). My vet explained that when plaque remains on teeth for 3-5 days, it mineralizes, forming tartar, which leads to painful gingivitis and bad breath. Tartar buildup then leads to periodontal disease, which can cause abscesses, bone loss, and eventually infection of the heart, liver, and kidneys. Therefore, lack of dental care can be fatal!
I felt so ashamed for overlooking this vital aspect of my pets' care. It is common sense, yet it never even occurred to me. Since then I have made a daily effort to brush my pets' teeth.
My vet gave me a sample toothpaste and brush, but I also use human travel size toothbrushes with flexible ends. Toothpaste with chlorhexidine, hexametaphosphate, or zinc gluconate is ideal, but I can't always afford it. However, the most important aspect is the mechanical action of scraping plaque off your pet's teeth. Every day I am amazed at the amount of "gunk" that comes off my cat's teeth.
Lessons & tips:
- The younger your pet is, the easier introducing dental care will be.
- Start gradually. First introduce them to the paste (if using any)--there are flavored varieties available.
- Next let them get used to brush, pad, or finger contact with their teeth and gums.
- Be gentle, use a calm voice, give plenty of praise!
- I "conditioned" my cats using treats. It may seem counterproductive, but it was the only way I could get them to accept and look forward to having their teeth cleaned.
- Consider what you feed them. Dry food is generally more abrasive on teeth, leaving less plaque than wet foods. There are also specific brands for dental health.
- Remember, you wouldn't ignore your own teeth--why would you ignore your pet's?
