How to volunteer for a living
How I did it: In January I left my job as a teacher to work for a Non Profit organization. I learned a month after starting the job that the state was behind in paying organizations their grant funds. So we weren't sure when we were going to be paid. I used my savings to sustain me and after a couple of months I decided to tell the Non Profit to take me off payroll. They were not doing well enough financially and I had enough money that would take care of my until August. Well, I did have enough money, but it was a little more complicated than that.
Lessons & tips: Make sure that you have enough money to sustain yourself. Not just enough money to "get by", but enough to buy that nice pair or shoes you want or get away for a long weekend. That way, your time is not spent worrying about if the latte you got from Starbucks is going to come back around to bite you when you need to buy gas.
Resources: I had money in savings that sustained me.
